Meet "Lele" HerStory
Candidate for Omaha Public School Board-District 1
Dr. LeDonna White York - "Lele"
LeDonna's educational journey began with her father (single parent), who independently raised five children after the loss of his wife. Although, he was not a high school graduate and did not participate in schooling as the “traditional” family, the foundations of schooling and importance of reading began in the home. There was always a set time immediately following dismissal from school that all five children had to sit down and discuss and complete homework. This focus on education became the glue and inspiration for LeDonna to pursue a career as an educator.
LeDonna attended the University of Nebraska at Omaha and received her Bachelor’s of Arts and Science in Education, Master of Science in Educational Administration & Supervision. In 2006 LeDonna received her Doctor of Education in Educational Administration & Supervision with an endorsement in Superintendency.
LeDonna is a passionate educator who has been directly connected to the Omaha Public Schools for the past 20 years. In 1993, LeDonna served as an intern through the OPS Minority Intern Program at Walnut Hill and Franklin Elementary (District 1). She taught numerous grade levels at Miller Park Elementary (District 1), served as an Assistant Principal for 6 years at Lothrop Magnet Center (District 1) an Assistant Principal at Benson West and currently (2013) for the past 6 years serves as Principal at Beals Elementary School.
LeDonna is the very proud parent of her two children, Dominique and Tre. Dominique attended OPS (PK-12) and graduated from Central High School performing as well as the top 15% of her graduating class. She is attending her second year at Spelman College in Atlanta, Georgia. Her declared degree is Biology, Pre-Med, with aspirations of becoming a medical doctor. Tre is a sixth grader who already understands that if God is in charge, then nothing is impossible. He also performs very well academically and has been identified as gifted by OPS in the area of mathematics. We have been members of Eagles Nest Worship Center for 7 years.
LeDonna's love of God, family, and the North Omaha community are the driving forces behind her wanting to make Omaha Public Schools not only a "good" district, but a "great" place to educate all children! As a member of the OPS School Board, LeDonna will be a strong advocate for the interest of the students, parents and teachers of North Omaha.
During LeDonna's tenure at Miller Park she was nominated "Role Model Teacher of The Year." LeDonna serves as a mentor to students, many colleagues and aspiring administrators. She volunteers her time often with a continued advocacy for the growth of her community. LeDonna was the recipient of the Concerned and Caring Educators Scholarship and now in return gives this same scholarship to a graduating senior annually. She herself strongly believes that “it takes a village to educate a community!”
